La Ceiba is one of several major communities in Honduras from which Garifuna people have been migrating to New York since the 1960s, in many cases first through the merchant marine and the cruise industry. Those from La Ceiba now in New York have remained in close touch with each other and the home community, with at least one major annual gathering in the city. The south and central Bronx remain a focal point for people from La Ceiba and for Honduran Garifunas more broadly.
