The Worlds We Speak

San Jerónimo Xayacatlán, Mexico

Several hundred people from San Jerónimo Xayacatlán in Mexico’s Puebla state have formed a community in and around Port Richmond on Staten Island, where many have come in recent decades, often working as day laborers. Many of those from San Jerónimo speak the local variety of the Indigenous language they call Tu’un Savi, known to outsiders as Mixtec—which is likely the most widely spoken Indigenous Latin American language in New York.
