The Worlds We Speak

Artibonite Haiti

Artibonite is one of Haiti’s ten departments, hugging the country’s western coast. Though Haitian New Yorkers come from every corner of the country, the predominantly rural Artibonite became a significant sending region starting in the 1960s and ’70s. For decades, Central Brooklyn has been the capital of Haitian America, as well as home to a large Artibonite diaspora, including groups like Association des Rivartibonitiens à l’Étranger which have helped support roads, schools, and health clinics back in Artibonite.
