New York is home to more Dominicans than any other city besides Santiago, the capital of the Dominican Republic and the center of its northern Cibao region. By most accounts, “El Cibao” is also the area from which the largest number of Dominican immigrants originate, with many settling initially in the 1960s and ’70s in Washington Heights and later in neighborhoods across the Bronx. In some cases, significant numbers of people from individual villages or towns in the Cibao region have moved to the same neighborhood or the same blocks in NYC.
