Named for the “two rivers” Beas and Sutlej, the Doaba region of Punjab is the major sending zone for much of the Punjabi diaspora worldwide, including in New York.

Richmond Hill, Queens, and the surrounding area represents the city’s most concentrated Punjabi-speaking neighborhood, with many having come in the 1980s and ’90s in the wake of political instability and anti-Sikh persecution.
