The Worlds We Speak
Mariam Ghani
Solukhumbu, Nepal

Thousands of Sherpas in New York have ties to the Solukhumbu area of northern Nepal in the region of Mt. Everest (known in Sherpa as Chomolungma), where so many famous Sherpa mountaineers have worked. Many Sherpas also speak Nepali, the national language, and Tibetan, to which Sherpa is closely related and to which there are deep religious and cultural ties. Sherpa New Yorkers increasingly live across the metro region, but most are in and around Jackson Heights and Elmhurst, not far from the Sherpa Gompa, a Tibetan Buddhist temple founded by the United Sherpa Association and visited by many different Himalayan groups.
